The Midlands Working Test was held at Manor Farm, Croome Hill, Upton Upon Severn, Worcestershire  by kind permission of Toby and Alison Spiers and generously sponsored by Skinners Pet Foods Ltd.

The land provided a ridge and furrow field, ditches to cross, hedges to push through and a field of reeds and white grass.

The weather was dry with a mixture of cloud and sun becoming quite warm.

Thank you to our judges Mr Graham Bird (A3147) Ms. Angie Cooper (NP) Mrs. Sue Millward (NP) Mr. Adrian Phillips (NP) for so generously giving up their time to judge and offer support and guidance.

Thank you to all those who worked before and after the day behind the scenes and those who came to help on the day. For many of the volunteers it was the first time they had ever been to a Working Test so my grateful thanks to them for stepping into the unknown.

Special Puppy and Novice were held in the morning

After 2 withdrawals 8 Special Puppy competitors undertook 4 tests.

– a mark and a blind in the same place
– steadiness incorporating heelwork, the handler leaving the dog and the dog collecting a thrown dummy.
– A mark from woodland into an open field
– A walk up

The judges were very complimentary about the puppies noting their drive and enthusiasm.

1st Gordon Blyth with Jango Gentle Breeze who was awarded the Arrowhill Cup

2nd Graham Clelland with Gwenadillo Chive Bunny of Necessares

3rd Ian Kedie with Oiyou Belmont who was also awarded the Wishaw Puppy Cup for highest placed puppy under 18months

After a two withdrawals, 8 Novice dogs undertook 4 tests:

– a mark through a hedge followed by a blind to the side
– a hunting exercise
– a mark
– 2 dog walk up

At the end of the morning 1st place was not awarded

2nd Jenny Jones with Roxwood Bay River of Yonstaff who received the Monica Woods Trophy

3rd Helen Fox with Satinbaze Cracksman for Blacktoft

4th Anne Kitching with Casblaidd Angels Landing

CofM Anne Haley with Skybrook if by Chance

NDNH was held in the afternoon with 5 dogs undertaking 4 tests similar to the Special Puppy Tests held in the morning. Again the judges were complimentary about the dogs and kindly spent time putting competitors at ease.

1st Jacqui Good with Sunflicker Monster Munch who was awarded the Larksburn Cup

2nd Nicola Bawden with Chance of Thunder

3rd Barry Doherty with Necessares Skellig Ilands

4th Barry Doherty with Blouet Gaudete with Arrowhill

The Open had 11 competitors and undertook 4 tests

– a shot to indicate a dummy behind a hedge and a shot to indicate a dummy in a field over a ditch.

Most dogs were drawn towards the shot and crossed over the ditch via a bridge but then ran the ditch a little on return. Most dogs were confident to push through the hedge for the second retrieve.

– A hunting exercise

The dogs had to retrieve 2 dummies from an area of a ridge and furrow field. This was a test as to how well the wind was considered.

– A retrieve from a wood into an open field.
– a 2 dog walk up.

This was held in a field of reeds and white grass which proved challenging.

A run off consisting of a long mark into a jumping pen was held for 1st place.

1st Vivienne Gatter with Larksease Black Bryony who was awarded the Pallingforth Trophy

2nd Reece Merry with Swantonwood Gold Leaf who was awarded the Yonsaff Cup

3rd Malcolm Awty with Maddistream Raj Red

Reece Merry was also awarded the Vortex Cup for Judges Choice
