FCRS Working Flatcoated Retriever Development Programme.

Are you a Novice Handler or perhaps you have a young flatcoat in training for gundog work? If so the FCRS has a new training initiative for you.

The FCRS Working Flatcoated Retriever Development Programme (Level 1) is a two day training programme suitable for novice (or more experienced handlers) with young or novice Flatcoats, who wish to improve their partnership with their dog and to gain experience in control, obedience, hunting and retrieving.

The training will be delivered by a number of trainers at different venues around the country, corresponding roughly to the FCRS Working Test Areas. Each training day will be for 6 handlers (with a maximum number of 8). The training will consist of two full days, four to six weeks apart. We hope the same 6 handlers will attend each of the two days, so that one day builds upon the other, with time to practice what you and your dog have learnt in between.

The cost of the training to FCRS members will be £130 (£65 per day). Non members are also welcome – the cost to non members will be £140 (£70 per day). Each day will start with a 9:45 briefing and run through to approximately 3:30 with a break for lunch.

On completion of this training you and your dog will have gained experience of off lead heel work, steadiness to shot, thrown dummies, other dogs working and being left briefly by the handler; they will have learnt to hunt effectively in different cover and conditions, to pick up and retrieve dummies from a variety of different locations including over obstacles and from water and will have participated in simulated drives and walked up scenarios.

After completing this training you may wish to take the Kennel Club Working Gundog Certificate on Dummies and the FCRS will endeavour to facilitate this by arranging one or more KCWGC Assessment days (TBC). Further details of the KCWGC may be viewed here https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/events-and-activities/field-trials-and-working-gundogs/already-competing-in-field-trials/

Please note that this is not a course for complete beginners to gundog work. Dogs will be expected to already have basic obedience, heel work, recall retrieves and delivery, If you and your dog are complete beginners to gundog training please contact your FCRS Area Working Test and Training Organiser or the Society’s Working Test Secretary, who will be able to put you in touch with local trainers or Gundog Clubs that will help you get started.
