2021 update-The Society continues to work towards collecting DNA from affected dogs which will enable further breed specific research into this condition, this work was supported by Cathryn Mellersh and her team at the AHT until its closure in 2020, click here to read about work carried out so far. It is hoped that during 2021 the banking of DNA samples will continue and we will post more details when we receive a further update from Cathryn Mellersh.

Group Study
The Group Study began in 2011 with the first participants being born during 2010, for the last ten years it has been a rolling study with some new participants joining each year. The study aims to follow the life of a group of Flatcoats without anonymity from the age of 8 weeks with health data collected annually. Having collected data for ten years the Society Health Committee have now taken the decision to close the rolling study to new participants. We have approximately 50 dogs still actively participating in the group and we will continue to collect annual health reports from these dogs.
We will continue to make an annual Group Study report at the Flatcoated Retriever Society’s AGM, and this will subsequently be posted on the Society website. In time we hope to analyse the full lifetime data from all the dogs that have participated (over 100) in the study and this information will be shared to inform health research as necessary.
We are extremely grateful to owners of past and currently enrolled dogs for their participation.
The annual questionnaire for remaining participants can be downloaded here:
